An open letter to Congressman Kean - the Trump Indictment

Congressman Kean,

Your latest newsletter contains no mention of the indictment—by a grand jury of American citizens—of former President Trump for criminal charges under the Espionage Act. Far from trivial charges, the counts include the unlawful retention of sensitive national defense documents, including nuclear secrets and classified war plans on any US response to a foreign attack.

Trump, like every other citizen, has the right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The legal process should be allowed to play out, without any outside political or ideological interference, especially because this case features high-stakes national security issues.

Without even waiting to hear the case argued in open court—and despite devastating evidence contained in the detailed indictment—many GOP standard bearers are attacking the process as corrupt. They have chosen to smear prosecutors rather than contest the factual merits of the charges.

Instead of allowing the legal process to play out, Speaker McCarthy immediately politicized the indictment, saying, “I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice. House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.”

Congressman Kean, do you agree with McCarthy’s statement? How about any of the plethora of statements like it from members of your party—some even threatening violence?

Our country is at a crossroads. Will we reaffirm that the United States has one set of laws that apply to every citizen—even a former President? Or will we follow the road to authoritarian rule by attacking and undermining the Justice Department simply to protect the de-facto leader of your party?

Your constituents deserve to know whether or not you believe in “equal justice before the law.” The clock is ticking.
