OneNJ7 Endorses Andy Kim in New Jersey’s 2024 Democratic Senate primary.
OneNJ7, an Indivisible group centered in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, announced
today that it has endorsed U.S. Rep. Andy Kim in New Jersey's 2024 Democratic Senate
primary.
Andy Kim is a Rhodes Scholar, has a Masters and Doctoral degree in International Relations
from Oxford University, and is currently serving his third term in Congress. Kim has a proven
record: he delivered relief to homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy, voted for quality,
affordable health care, and supports Small Businesses. Congressman Andy Kim’s public
service includes being a national security official, an adviser to Generals Petraeus and Allen,
U.S. Security Council Director for Iraq. On the issues most important to New Jersey voters,
affordability, abortion access and women’s healthcare, gun violence and social security Andy
Kim has voted with the will of the people.
Congressman Andy Kim works for the people of New Jersey, strengthening congressional ethics
and getting money and its corrupting influence out of politics. Because of his refusal to accept
corporate PAC contributions.New Jersey residents should be confident he actively serves all of
his constituents. As the son of immigrants and a husband and father to young children, Andy
understands the potential for success in our country and the barriers people face when trying to
do better. It should be noted that Mr. Kim has no familial ties in government helping him win an
election. When presented with a candidate of Andy’s character, intelligence and experience it is
the responsibility of voters to say no to corruption and nepotism and vote for Andy Kim in the
June 2024 democratic candidate primary.
There is no comparing Andy Kim to the other announced candidates, Bob Menendez and
Tammy Murphy. Andy Kim stands head and shoulders above the other candidates when it
comes to experience necessary to serve in the United States Senate and ethics.
If Tammy Murphy wins the primary in June it will be for no other reason than machine politics
handing her the county line.
OneNJ7 used a ranked choice voting system to choose Kim over the other declared candidates,
Bob Menendez and Tammy Murphy, wife of Gov. Phil Murphy. Ranked choice voting allows
voters to rank their choices for a seat without wasting their vote. If New Jersey implemented
RCV it would take some of the power from a few county chairs and put it back into the voters
hands.
The County Line system, which is a New Jersey phenomenon, gives county party chairs control
over candidate ballot placement in most counties. Chairs use this power to give their preferred
candidate the first spot on the ballot. Studies show the top ballot spot boosts a candidate's vote
share by up to 35 percentage points in the primary election. This makes it extremely difficult for
any candidate not backed by the party machine to win. The system is currently being challenged
in federal court.
OneNJ7 used Ranked Choice Voting when polling members about endorsing a candidate.
Kim received 71.2% of first-choice votes. Tammy Murphy 9%, Larry Hamm received 4.25% and
no endorsement 2.8%. Eligible write-in candidates, Tom Malinowski received 13.4% and Mikie
Sherrill less than 1%.
