Our Congressman does not like to talk about abortion. His campaign website said nothing about it. His other, “dark” website described Kean as a “fierce defender of the sanctity of life, fighting every step of the way to protect the unborn from egregious abortion laws proposed in New Jersey, and will continue to do so in Congress.” The New Jersey law the dark site referred to was the “Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act,”which legalized the right to abortion in New Jersey. Not surprisingly, Kean voted “No” on that bill. Later in the campaign, he flubbed a statement by appearing to support a woman’s right to choose, except in the case of rape or incest. Kean eventually retracted the flub, saying that actually, he would support a woman’s right to an abortion for any reason up until about 20 weeks into the pregnancy.
Congressman Kean, it’s time for another statement. Do you agree with the Texas judge whose ruling would force the immediate ban of the ”abortion pill,” mifepristone? Know that if you do, women all over the country will find it much more difficult to obtain safe and effective abortions—even here in New Jersey, where abortion is legal thanks to the law that you opposed.
We have learned from Dobbs that ANYTHING can happen when it comes to abortion rights in America now. And given that abortions using mifepristone now account for more than half of all abortions in the US, this issue could have dire consequences for millions of American women.
If Congressman Kean wants to put his money where his mouth is on abortion rights for those in the early weeks of pregnancy, he must condemn this attack on a woman’s right to bodily autonomy and defend his female constituents in NJ7. Time to choose, Congressman Kean: your constituents—or your party.
