NOTE: Representative Kean was absent from Congress from March 5 to June 30. During that nearly four-month absence, his office said only that he was being treated for a "personal medical issue," giving no other details.

In a speech in the House on June 30, Kean revealed he had been hospitalized for treatment of depression. He said he was now "healthier, stronger, and excited to return to the work I love." He also remarked that he is "a private person by nature" and that "talking about myself has never come naturally."

We at OneNJ7 are glad that Kean is well. But we have not forgotten that he has always avoided any public meeting with his constituents, never holding a town hall or other public event where voters could ask him questions. He may be "a private person by nature," but by virtue of his elected office, he is a public figure and owes it to his constituents to meet with and listen to them.

Record in Washington

Tom Kean votes in line with Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda.

His voting record has drawn criticism from constituents who believe his positions:

  • Put party priorities ahead of district needs

  • Undermine affordable healthcare protections

  • Fail to address rising costs for families

  • Do not adequately defend democratic norms or accountability

Kean, Jr. refuses to support women's health, including access to safe, legal abortions.  In the NJ legislature he voted against codifying Roe vs. Wade.

Transparency & Accountability

NJ-07 residents span suburban, rural, and small-town communities. We expect regular communication, accessible representation, and a willingness to explain votes and positions.

Tom Kean does not meet this standard—particularly when it comes to public engagement and responsiveness. He does not hold town halls or other in-person events where constituents can question him.

Congressman Thomas Kean Jr.

Kean has been the U.S. representative from New Jersey's 7th congressional district since 2023. He represented New Jersey's 21st legislative district in the New Jersey Senate from 2003 to 2022, serving as minority leader from 2008 to 2022.

His father is former NJ governor Thomas Kean, a Republican.

Political Integrity Project has developed a Integrity Index, a political finance database that grades politicians on their financial and political integrity. We reward politicians who stand for their constituents rather than the people who can pay them the most and shame those who take corporate PAC money, hold individual stocks, and raise most of their money from wealthy and out-of-state donors.

Tom Kean is graded an F on the Integrity Index.
