Primary election how-to guide

The Democratic primary on June 2 will determine which candidate will go on to the November 3 general election for Representative of New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. In other words, Democratic voters will decide who shall oppose incumbent Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr.

Primary contests for various other local races will also be on the ballot, and the Republican Party will be holding its primary at the same time (Kean has no primary opponent.)

CAN I VOTE IN THE JUNE 2 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY?

First of all, you must be a registered voter. If you haven’t voted in a while or are unsure your registration is correct, check here.

If you are not registered, click here to find both the online and paper applications, and their instructions.

The deadline to register to vote in the primary is May 12.

Secondly, you must be a Democratic voter to take part in the Democratic Party primary. You are a Democratic voter if you have previously voted in the party’s primaries, or have filed a declaration of Democratic Party affiliation, and have not subsequently switched. If you are unaffiliated, you can declare a party affiliation at the polls on Primary Day, or when you apply for a mail ballot.

But if you have been affiliated with another party, and now wish to vote in the Democratic Party primary, you must change your affiliation. Download this form - fill it out and return it to your county Board of Elections.

The deadline to change your party affiliation is April 8.

WHAT ARE THE THREE WAYS TO VOTE?

Vote by mail:

New Jersey law allows any registered voter to vote by mail if they choose.

If you have voted by mail in recent elections, you can expect to receive a mail-in ballot. County election offices will begin mailing them out on April 18.

If you have not voted by mail before, you can apply online.

The deadline to apply for a mail-in primary ballot is May 26 – but that only allows a week for your application to be processed and the ballot sent to you. Don’t wait that long! Do it sooner! Now is good!

The vote-by-mail ballot will come with instructions for filling it out and returning it. Be sure to follow them exactly! You can put your ballot in the U.S. Mail or drop it in a Secure Drop Box. Locations of those drop boxes will be announced in May.

Vote early in person:

Each county will hold early in-person voting at designated locations from Tuesday, May 26 (the day after Memorial Day) until Sunday, May 31. The polls will be open 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. except for Sunday, when they will close at 6:00 p.m. Note that the locations will NOT be the same as Primary Day polling places. You'll be able to find the locations in your county once they are announced.

Vote on Primary Day, June 2:

Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sample ballots will be mailed to registered voters on or before May 20, and will include the polling place location. By late May, you’ll also be able to look up your polling location.
